IRONGATE

Six nights a week, somebody is on the mat

Irongate is a combat sports gym in a converted steelworks on Attercliffe Road, Sheffield. BJJ, boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling and strength — sixty-one classes a week, and the timetable is on this page.

Claim your free week

No contracts, no joining fee, and nobody will make you spar in your first month.

Coached, not supervised

Nine coaches, four of them full-time. Every class is led, corrected and progressed — nobody is left hitting a bag on their own.

Beginner sessions, ringfenced

Fourteen classes a week are beginners only. Same coaches, same syllabus, nobody in the room who has done it for ten years.

Juniors from six

Kids' classes six days a week, capped at sixteen with two coaches on the mat. Grading is free and we do not sell belts.

Prices on the wall

Three memberships, all rolling monthly, all listed below. Cancel with a month's notice and nobody will ring you about it.

Irongate Combat Academy

We opened in 2014 in half a unit off Attercliffe Road with four mats and a borrowed ring. There are now eleven hundred square metres, two cages, a full strength floor and about four hundred members, and it is still the same three of us who started it.

Most people who walk in have never trained. That is who the place is built for: ringfenced beginner classes, coaches who correct rather than shout, and a rule that nobody spars until they ask to. The competitors came later and they train here too, which is the point — you learn faster in a room with people better than you.

What we ask of you

  • Turn up+
  • Tap early+
  • Help beginners+
  • Wash your kit+

That is the whole code of conduct and it is on the wall by the door. The first one is the hard one. Everything else — the technique, the fitness, the confidence people say they came for — follows from being in the room three times a week for a year.

I turned up at thirty-eight having never done a press-up. Nobody laughed and nobody made me spar. Two years later I have a blue belt and I have not missed a Tuesday.

My daughter is nine and she was painfully shy. Ellie has her leading the warm-up now. That is worth more to me than the thirty-two quid a month.

I have trained at four gyms in Yorkshire. This is the only one where the good lads will spend a round teaching you instead of using you as a crash mat.

Right — you are on the list.

Nobody's first class went well

You will be unfit, uncoordinated and out of breath in four minutes, and so was everyone else in the room. Come for a week on us and see whether you want the second one.
